Whelping Box Setup: Safety and Emergency Planning
Posted by Dog Supplies R Us on
A safe whelping area supports the mother while allowing you to observe newborn puppies.
What breeders need to know
Step 1
Choose a quiet location away from heavy foot traffic. Use a box large enough for the mother to lie comfortably, with cleanable surfaces and appropriate barriers to reduce accidental crushing.
Step 2
Gather washable bedding, clean towels, gloves, a digital scale, and a veterinary emergency number. Use temperature control carefully and provide space to move away from heat sources.
Step 3
Discuss expected labor signs with your veterinarian ahead of time. Heavy bleeding, collapse, a stuck puppy, or prolonged unproductive straining can be emergencies.
Step 4
Do not attempt invasive delivery techniques or administer labor-inducing drugs without veterinary guidance. After birth, monitor the mother's condition and confirm that puppies are nursing.
Breeder action checklist
