Newborn Puppy Care: Nursing, Warmth and Weight Tracking
Posted by Dog Supplies R Us on
Newborn puppies need close observation because they can deteriorate quickly.
What breeders need to know
Step 1
Watch that each puppy nurses and stays appropriately warm. A puppy that is cold, weak, persistently crying, or unable to latch needs prompt veterinary advice.
Step 2
Weigh puppies with the same scale at consistent intervals and record trends. Poor weight gain, dehydration concerns, or reduced activity deserve immediate attention.
Step 3
Keep bedding clean and minimize unnecessary exposure to visitors and unvaccinated animals. Avoid direct-contact heating devices that may cause burns.
Step 4
Ask your veterinarian for a plan for examinations, parasite control, vaccinations, and feeding support. Never guess medication doses for newborns.
Breeder action checklist
- Discuss your dog's individual health needs with a licensed veterinarian.
- Keep dates, observations, and veterinary findings in a permanent record.
- Make a plan for unexpected complications before they happen.
- Continue learning through the Dog Breeders Academy.
