What is canine brucellosis?
Canine brucellosis is a contagious bacterial infection that can affect reproduction, including infertility, pregnancy loss, and infection in puppies. Some infected dogs show few obvious symptoms. It can also infect people, so handling suspected cases requires professional guidance.
Before breeding
Ask a veterinarian about appropriate Brucella canis screening for both dogs, including the timing of tests and how to interpret results. Do not rely on appearance, a prior successful litter, or a single unexplained negative result when exposure is possible.
If a test is positive or unclear
Do not proceed with mating, semen collection, or insemination until your veterinarian provides a plan. Follow professional instructions about confirmatory testing, isolation, infection control, and public health considerations.
Records and disclosure
Keep test dates and laboratory reports. Ask a veterinarian when retesting is appropriate after exposure or changes in a dog's breeding situation.
